This time of year tends to be harder on my psyche than most. I suppose it’s because it’s usually dreary and cloudy during the day, and it gets dark so stinkin’ early! There are times I find JT nodding off at 7pm in front of Hallmark because it feels as if it’s midnight. Anyone else know one of those?
During the early months of the year, I need some warmth and waaaay more light than comes my way. Unfortunately, not all of us can swing down south to catch our much-needed vitamin D, so the Pilafs did the next best thing… visited Gardens in the Dark at the Botanical Gardens.

Botanical Gardens – Gardens in the Dark – Lackawanna, NY

When was the last time you stopped in at the Botanical Gardens? Open year-round, it’s cozy, colorful and full of creative energy. Day or night it’s a great pick-me-up, and it includes a few simple and fun activities for kids.

But here’s the GREAT news – during selective weekends in the winter, a special exhibit is happening. To conquer the cold and dark, the doors of the gardens are opened up in the evenings to visitors of all ages and nature is illuminated. It’s lovely! It’s breathtaking! It’s peaceful! It’s one big sky of LIGHT!

Reservations are a must since there is a limit of viewers each night. Masks are required, but photography, strolling, peaceful breathing, learning, and hand holding is allowed.
Make sure to look for the fish in the ponds, the photography in the hallway, and for the progress of the Amorphophallus titanum (the Corpse Flower). The Botanical Gardens is the perfect stop for a night out, and WOO HOO, it can now be combined with dinner in Erie County!
Curly’s Grill & Banquet Center – Lackawanna

Curly’s is a favorite of ours, and we recommend it often to friends in WNY. The menu has a variety of delicious entrees and many options for those who are gluten-free. Combine these two offerings and it makes both Pilafs very happy. They have perfected their jerk, and JT loves their jerk chicken wings.

The atmosphere is similar to the gardens we visited earlier. They have low-lighting and beautiful, sparkly chandeliers. It is intimate and cozy – perfect for a date night. It is classy without breaking the bank, and the staff are attentive, efficient and friendly.
We would suggest making reservations. There is a parking lot across the side street.
Both the Gardens in the Dark and Curley’s get a Pilaf Home Run!
