The Pilafs headed down to Canalside in downtown Buffalo to check out what is happening by the water this summer. We ventured into several fun history lessons and were humbled by a traveling exhibit that came to NY for the first time.

The walkway along the water is lined with gardens that are very well taken care of and incredibly beautiful. There are many varieties of flowers in the beds and pots throughout the walk. Kudos to the gardeners!

Most of the boardwalk and pathways are level and smooth, perfect for strollers and wheelchairs.
There are places to sit and enjoy the water and there are both grassy areas and tables to picnic.
With several places to eat and enjoy a cocktail, we noticed that Liberty Hound’s patio was hoppin’. Clinton’s was also open for quick service and craft beers, and the staff were both efficient and friendly.

Looking for entertainment? You can go on a boat tour, rent kayaks and other water boats, enjoy the several outdoor games, ride the carousel and even play in the sand.
Loaded with history, the Buffalo & Erie County Naval and Military Park offers tours of decommissioned Naval vessels that served in a variety of military conflicts in our nation’s history. The tour is fascinating and the crew incredibility informative. www.buffalonavalpark.org They have several events coming up beyond the Wednesday- Sunday tours. Check them out!
The Buffalo Maritime Center is now open and both written history and an observation area are upstairs.
Canalside is dedicated to honoring our military, and there are several permanent memorials and remembrances throughout the area. All of them are tastefully done and impressive.

This weekend, we were able to visit the traveling wall dedicated to those military men and women who lost their lives since the 2001 attack. There are 7000 dog tags on the flag and one of the men guarding the wall (A 30 year veteran) said 60 WNY families were affected. It was humbling and heartbreaking to see families visiting and taking photos of their loved ones’ tags.
This area is perfect for families, dates, best friends and visitors. There are several options for fun right on the boardwalk area and even more within walking distance. If you haven’t been to this area in Buffalo recently, check it out! There is much to see and learn!
